THE EDITOR'S PRE?ACE
When a man holds up a book, and e~ye, "You r.iust believe this, because
it sa~rs, 'Thus sait"1 the Lord!" should we not pity that nBn, Does he
comprehend the 11berty of rten to acquire knowledge'?
Any bnok that imparts k~owledge of t~e life and destiny of men, is a
good book. Any book that unfolds the cha. ra cter and r,ers on of J ehovih ,and
the wonder and glory of His creations, is a good book.
When a book giTee us inforM!t~n of thin~e we know not of, it should
also giT~ us a method of proving that inforl!l:ltion to be true. Thie book
coTers that ground.
The de.y has arrived when men will not acc~rt prorla:d.tions and asser-
tions; he ~-ants plausible reasons, or substantial proofs, tr.at the authority
be not merel~r a pretense, but a demonstreble fact.
The ti~e of me.n-wors..,,_ip is at en end; readers no longer accept a
book as good and great, merel:r because any certai.:i one wrote 1t. The book
must m Te merits f ite own, otherwise it will soon pass out of er...istence.
When a man says, "I heard the voice of Jehovih, saying," that part
of his speech is worthless. When he says, "I heard the Toice of Jehovih,
saying: "no ye unto others as ye would that they should do unto you,"then
the words become valuable. Hie assertion of' his authority is of no anil
in this age of the world, The words purportin~ to be JehovJ.h'a s...hould,
therefore, ve the only consideration as to merit. And a 11 men have a
right to pasa judgment thereon. Is it not the li~ht of .TehovL~ within all
men, that makes them conscious of wisdom and truth'? If' so, then men's ex-
pression of any truth or wisdom is Jehovih's expression.
It a book were to fa 11 down tron the sky with .Tehovih 'e eigna ture to
it, man would not accept the book on that account. Wry, then, should any-
f thin~ be s9id about how this book was w.it ten" It blows nobody's horn;
1+ makes no leader. It is not a destroyer of old eyetems or reli~ions.
It reTea la a new one adapted to this agei \vhe~1;.J.n8 rl men Ctli1 bE, ~THR.El~.
